The Prophecy of "Piercing"

The basis for this article is derived from Rabbi Tovia Singer's book titled "Let's Get Biblical."

The New Testament frequently references verses from the Old Testament to bolster the claim that Jesus's crucifixion was predicted in ancient scriptures. According to Christians, Psalm 22 is seen as a portrayal of Jesus's crucifixion, highlighting the piercing of his hands and feet. Christians are captivated by the detailed nature of this description, marveling at how King David seemingly foresaw the imagery of Jesus's crucifixion over 600 years before it occurred. However, one crucial detail is often overlooked: the pivotal word in this verse, "pierce", is absent from the original Hebrew text. Instead, this Hebrew word "ka'ari" translates to "like a lion."

When King David found himself pursued by his enemies, he fervently prayed to God for deliverance, inspiring him to compose this famous Psalm. Throughout the Psalm, David employs vivid metaphors to describe his relentless adversaries, likening them to various wild animals such as lions, wild dogs, and bulls. Verses like "Many bulls surround me; strong bulls of Bashan encircle me. Roaring lions that tear their prey open their mouths wide against me" (Psalm 22:12-13) and "Deliver me from the sword, my precious life from the power of the dogs. Rescue me from the mouth of the lions; save me from the horns of the wild oxen" (Psalm 22:20-21) illustrate these descriptions. Similarly, "They have tracked me down, they now surround me, with eyes alert, to throw me to the ground. They are like a lion hungry for prey, like a fierce lion crouching in cover" (Psalm 17:11-12) vividly portrays the threats David faced.

Consistently, the Hebrew term "ka'ari" in the examples above is translated as "lion," except for Psalm 22:16, where it was rendered as "pierce." This inconsistency has often led Christians to refer to Psalm 22 as the "Messianic Psalm of the Cross," believing that David's mention of pierced hands and feet symbolizes the future crucifixion of Jesus, centuries later.

With a correct translation, Psalm 22:16 should read, "Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they are like lions at my hands and my feet." However, according to Christian Bible translations, it is presented as: "Dogs surround me, a pack of villains encircles me; they pierce my hands and my feet." This alteration in translation significantly impacts the verse's meaning, leading to its interpretation as a prophecy of the Messiah's arrival.
